Makena - Happy Thanksgiving!

Just a quick hello from Sarah here. We have gotten word that Phillip Winter's blog posts are finally making it through to the these pages directly so he will continue to do the main daily update. We've had two days of painfully slow progress but have been doing much better since this morning. PW has a very tasty looking pumpkin pie in the oven now! He’s spent a Thanksgiving (and that Christmas) on a _53 day_ crossing before but he didn’t have pumpkin or condensed milk then.. Doing things better this time! Can't wait to taste it.

We saw whales this morning. One criss-crossed in front of us for a while which was very exciting.

Our Watt & Sea hydro generator's blades have been worn down, possibly by kelp of which we are seeing a lot these days. This means we need to run the generator each day to recharge the batteries whereas before we were getting 2 days before they ran down to close to the halfway mark. Having 8 people on board is no joke! As of yesterday or so this is the longest crossing we've done on Makena and the boat's lifetime log is now over 10,000 nm :) We've also been running without wind indicators for a few days now ... knowing the true and apparent wind speed is pretty important in decision making regarding what sails to use etc but we are making do.

The Kai update is that he climbed his first flight of stairs - he just went for it! He is more work than the boat and we have more than enough hands to help with that :) There are some things that only the mommy can deal with though... :)

Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate it - we're thinking of you and all the other ARC participants (all of whom are unfortunately still out of the range of our VHF radio).
