Discovering Porto

The Thursday afternoon 16 June Saving Grace II was the first boat to arrive at Douro Marina at Porto. The rest of the fleet were not far behind and before 1500 they were all berthed. Having had quite a frustratingly slow sail in a large swell on the short leg from Povoa de Varzim they all enjoyed a nice glass of wine at the marina cafeteria watching England play Wales. That evening the prize giving took place at the same Marina Cafe where there were a few changes to what the participants had done to actually receive the prizes.

With Dignity received the wooden spoon for the worst Smiley Miley and arriving first, the wooden spoon will have to be passed to the next boat with the worst Smiley Miley at the next port. Carnival won the ETA competition by guessing 19 minutes just over their actual time. Dashzani won the prize for the most competitive boat, placing second overall, second in the ETA competition and first in the Smiley Miley competition. Kinni Rossi won a bottle of Port wine for having been the boat to visit the most ports before arriving at Porto, having visited Leixoes briefly before arriving at the River Douro.

After the prize giving the fleet enjoyed a typical Portuguese dinner, sardines, at a local restaurant ten minutes away walk from the marina, where Joao Pedro Guimaraes, one of the marina director's, joined them.

Yesterday at 1400 4 tuk tuk’s picked up the participants from outside the marina to take them on a tour around Porto and to Churchill's Port wine cellar where the participants tried various different wines. The drivers/guides of the tuk tuks did an amazing job in keeping the tour interesting and enjoyable, and at the end were thanked by all the participants. By 1730 they were all back at the marina and had time to get any preparations needed for tomorrow’s departure to Figueira da Foz.
