Lexington - Captain Bob: Christmas Island

We are going on a tour of the island today. Some boats have left. Three boats will leave tomorrow.

Christmas Island is a part of Australia. It was about 600 miles west of Lombok. Their marketing is that they are Australia's Galapagos. We received a brochure from the island that promoted diving, red crab migration, whale sharks, and a beautiful environment.

The red crabs migrate to the ocean once a year around November. They literally cover everything in their way as they head to the ocean. The females release their eggs into the surf and the males release sperm into the surf. I have heard of sex on the beach but this leaves something to be desired. There apparently I have been told that the whale sharks eat as many eggs as they can. So is nature.

There is phosphate mining here. The port is where the phosphate is loaded for export. Depending on which way the wind blows we might be covered with fertilizer before we leave.

I will show a photo of the boat being loaded.

May fair winds fill your sails with anything but phosphate

Bob
