Shiva - Log day -90: Shiva & crew are getting prepared

August 7, 2015 – On a sunny Friday afternoon the Shiva crew, fully complete, got together in Hoog Soeren, the Netherlands. Under the fine hospitality of Herman & Inge the crew members started sharing their expectations, plans and dreams about the Atlantic Crossing. After months of preparation by Herman & Inge and weeks of excitement of the 4 additional crew members it was a great pleasure to be gathered together with the final group of 6 that will experience the ARC 2015 with Sailing Yacht Shiva. From discussions about the number of eggs to bring on board, to clothing and medical aid kits, to wonders about the wave heights and dreams of dolphins and flying fish and blue panoramas... It was a great first get-together and now the countdown has officially started for us!

About Shiva – an X-yacht (Xc-45) from Denmark, designed by Niels Jeppesen. Hull length of 13.86m, width of 4.32m and depth of 2.20m. The Shiva has a mainsail of 61.3 m2, Genoa 108% of 50.7 m2, self-tacking jib of 44.1 m2 and a spinnaker of 180 m2. For the crossing we leave the spinnaker at home and bring the Parasailor of 207 m2 instead.

Shiva is owned by Herman & Inge since spring 2012. The three of them experienced the North Sea Regatta, cross-overs to England, Scandinavia, Bay of Biscay, Algarve Portugal and much more. A comfortable ship that is easily handled when sailing two-up.  For sure there is enough experience to now take it to the next level and cross the Atlantic Ocean!

Meet the crew – so who are the Shiva crew members?! Please meet Herman, owner of Shiva and an experienced sailor with a wish to cross the Atlantic Ocean and most important of all, our captain for the crossing. His life companion Inge, co-owner of Shiva, is almost just as experienced as Herman and is the Purser of our crew. Inge will ensure that Shiva is properly provisioned with food, drinks and all other supplies that we will be needing for the crossing. Herman and Inge have asked their daughter Mariette to join this unique journey. Mariette is our Chief Stewardess, thereby supporting Inge with the provisioning and “boatkeeping”. What's more,  she will be our Personal (Yoga) Trainer! Mariette is bringing her boyfriend Daan, who will be responsible for the crew’s health and well-being as Shiva Doctor ánd as Fisherman catching fresh and healthy dinners (luckily our Purser is prepared for any unforeseen situations…) Next to meet is Gerard, Shiva’s Chief Engineer therefore responsible for all technical aspects of the Shiva and its equipment. Gerard is a sail friend of Herman and Inge with much experience on the (open) water. And then the 6th crew member is me, Nicoline, good friend of Mariette and Daan and I will be taking care of logging, blogging, possibly vlogging and all other communicative activities for Shiva as the ship’s Communication Manager.
