Gozwoz - Day 5 from Bermuda

The day started with the arrival of the weather front which we had seen to the north west all the previous day. During the night we had heavy persistent rain. At one point in the dark cockpit the Coxswain was alarmed to hear distressed exclamations from the Navigator only to learn that he had sat down on a wet seat having forgotten to don his waterproof trousers. The Coxswain stood the early morning watch and was later described by the Bosun as a drowned rat. The wind rapidly veered from the SW, which had been blowing us along since Bermuda, to north-east as foretold by the so-called weather GRIB files which Our Great Leader has been downloading daily via the SSB shortwave radio. Having sailed on the other tack during the morning we resorted to engine in the afternoon.

A comment on the daily SSB radio net with other boats was how poor the fishing has been on the rally but the Navigator is not to be outdone and has had a trolling line out for the last few days, so far it is said without success. However, he tells us that he has upgraded his lure today from a plastic squid to a minnow and has every confidence of an improved return before long. (Stop Press!! The Navigator had a fish on the line this evening but despite playing it skillfully it got away - he will continue with the minnow tomorrow with renewed optimism). A small sparrow like bird landed on the boat this morning and sat on the wheel; as we had the auto helm on and there was no-one behind the wheel it appeared to be briefly in command before accepting some biscuit crumbs and flying off. For the first time since Bermuda we have not seen a yacht all day but a container ship passed close by. The crew have been given "permission to grow" and face fungus of various quality and description is appearing. Roger the cabin boy is too young to participate but continues to rise manfully to all challenges. It is suspected that the Bosun may be enhancing his through a potion from his stores but this remains unproven. Talking of fungus we expect this blog to go fungal!
