Karma Wins - Blog 4 19th March

We have had the fishing line out but so far no success but it did attract a friendly booby. It soared over us, swooping down the side and round the bow and hovered near the stern. I nearly fell overboard trying to video it and have plenty of film of sea, ropes and parts of Karma Wins as I tried to follow it with the camera. They are such beautiful birds. Having had an easy afternoon the clouds built up at dusk and the rain clouds arrived. There was not too much wind in them but the wind direction changes by up to 40 degrees, drops and picks up. In the pitch dark with no wind indicator (we have to use the ARC flag on the mast) it can be tricky. Just before I went to bed a large flying fish landed and I was much more ruthless. It was so big I had to cut it in half to put it in the pan and it was delicious.

Poor Per, at about 2.30 am, had a huge cloud on the plotter coming for us but then the plotter packed up. A Japanese fishing boat was also operating in the area and they can be trawling nets for quite a distance. Per called them up on the radio but his English was not too good. The wind changed direction and picked up so we had to head south, parallel to the fishing boat. When Barry woke up he decided we should do a ‘granny’ jibe so off we went north-west.

Per went to bed, he had been up most of the night, and Barry jibed to go south again. The wind dropped and it was overcast and Barry decided he and I should drop the main and motor for a while. It then started raining and rained all day. Barry was collecting rainwater and Per was running the water-maker. He fills up some containers before it goes into the tank so we have bottles of Barry’s rainwater and Per’s pure water! I’m neutral.

I made bread and, of course, just as it was part-baked the gas ran out! Poor Barry had to go to the anchor locker, in the pouring rain, to change the gas. He was been drenched all morning. The bread was a bit of a strange shape but could have been worse.

We were all very tired so took it in turns to catch up on sleep and as it was the quietest night we all slept well. Today we are refreshed and sailing downwind with the genaker doing 4-5 knots with 12 knots of wind. It is a lovely sunny day, the washing is drying and we have just been visited by 2 dolphin/whales? They were big and had very snub noses unlike dolphins but we have no book to look them up. Barry was getting worried about his beer rations but has just found another stash so he is happy.

Wishing you all well Chrissy White
