Scarlet Oyster - Blog 27/11

We had a great start this morning with French Toast (thanks Mark!) and some great news. Scarlet Oyster is number 1 in its class!! Which is especially rewarding after a difficult night.

The evening before ended with a great sunset with very bright rays of sun through the clouds. This was accompanied with a very nice appetizer of Iberian ham. We brought two huge pieces of Iberian ham with us, which should
be plenty for the rest of the race. The appetizer was followed by a freshly made pasta Bolognese by our co-skipper Mark Burton. Superb!

The sunset with its bright rays through the clouds were a sign for a night without any stars. Although the GRIB files showed winds between 15 and 20 kts coming from a north easterly direction the actual weather that we had
was far from it. Plenty of gusts of wind up to 33 kts and wind shifts from 015 to 060 degrees made it very difficult conditions. Add to that no visual reference whatsoever (boats, stars) it was ridiculously difficult to keep the boat on track and on the right wind angle. The crew was fully prepped to take the kite down as quickly as possible. In the end we were lucky that we didn't have to lower the kite and we made very good progress on our way to ST Lucia.

One of the things that keeps us busy during the watch is spotting of animals. Points go to the first one who sees them. So far we had spotted a couple of birds (one took a ride on our boat for half a day, before taking off again) and a whale jumping out of the water and making a big splash. No points however for dolphins! There are too common ;).
