The day started with 16-20 knot winds. This was perfect sailing conditions for broad reaching under the beautiful, bright orange spinnaker. We were ticking off the miles and rolling through the watches with no problems. By late afternoon we saw a squall approaching from behind. The inevitable happened, as it always does, quicker than expected. With spinnaker and full main up, we went from a consistent 18 knots to 30+ knots before the crew could get on deck and prepare for the take down. Needless to say, the crew on the bow were saltwater wet from below and soaked from the pouring rain from above. We were actually Spinnaker is stowed and the foredeck crew smells much better now.

The effort paid off with an awesome dinner. Sarah had prepared a lovely Mousaka as we were leaving Las Palmas. The boat had the aroma of this dish wafting up to the upper deck and calling the crew to dinner. We accompanied the Mousaka with a nice Gato Negro Rioja wine.

By evening the wind speed took a nosedive. We got excited when we saw the gauge reading more than 10 knots. With some left over swell from the big winds on Sunday the sails were slapping as much as they were propelling the boat. We ended up pulling down the mainsail and flying the gennaker to starboard and the genoa to port. The wing and wing configuration sent us straight down the course to Cape Verde with the wind directly behind us. This quieted the boat down and our VMG increased slightly. Very comfortable ride.
