Hummingbird - 100nm to go

Today we broke the 100nm to go barrier, so we’re into double figures now and expecting an early hours of the morning arrival into Rodney Bay, St Lucia. A small flock of egrets joined us this afternoon, reminding us that land is not far away. Excited as we are to see land it was also a bittersweet reminder that this wonderful ocean crossing adventure of ours is almost at an end. The final edition of Nicky’s Nautical Notes included a poem I wrote inspired by all the fun we’ve had along the way and I must admit to being a tad emotional whilst reading it out:

We’re almost in St Lucia
Let’s reflect on what we’ve done
2000 plus miles
With hundreds of smiles
And buckets of sweat in the sun

We’ve woolled and pulled, gybed and tacked
We’ve sunned on the foredeck and read and relaxed
Thrown about by the waves
Been galley slaves
And enjoyed every moment, that’s fact

We’ve had rippers and wrappers
VMG’d like the clappers
And all in just 15 short days
To our skipper and mate
Huge thanks, you’ve been great
You never cease to amaze

Thoughts of home may now cross our minds
But not before icy cold drinks
Rum cocktail for me
Or a cold beer or three
And a bowl of gelato methinks

The Atlantic is nearly over
But really it’s all just begun
As it’s opened the door
For so much more
Ocean crossing fun

So thanks new friends for a fabulous time
And memories that will ever remain
I wish you fair winds
And lots of good things
And hope to sail with you again.

Yam Seng!
Nicky x
