Wild Iris - Trans-Atlantic 7: To fly or not to fly?

We go about 20% faster with the spinnaker, ( a second hand symmetric kite bought for the crossing) but its also a big risk. Down to Mindelo it had paid, where we had stable winds, moonlit nights and no threatening clouds. However, the risk of getting caught in a squall or running to deep and getting a wrap around the forestay have lead us to be much more cautious on this leg. We learnt our lesson on the second night where we got a wrap and had to spend a couple of hours untangling the mess before another couple of hours with repair tape to fix the holes! As we have progressed west the heat has increased in the day leaving threatening clouds at dusk. A downpour that came out of nowhere ( thankfully with no extra wind) convinced us we were not again going to contemplate flying the kite at night
