Timshel - Galapagos to Marquesas Day 21 A Vicious Calm!

You expect the wind to break things, not lack of it. We made good progress overnight, good breeze, but lots of (sheet) lightning around. Morning showed ominous black clouds then thunder rumbling as well as the lightning and we prepared for a blow. But the wind went away instead leaving us bouncing up and down in a huge sea from all directions, everything crashing and banging. Gave up waiting for wind and put sails and shark (towed charger) away and engine on. Then discovered that the slamming waves had seriously deranged the hydravane, it was all twisted round and the rudder at right angles, lashed it up as best I could. We motored slowly for just 2 hours and wind came back and sun came out, all lovely.  Steve tried to fix Hydra but just not possible underway - too much risk of dropping vital bits. So we now have to try Edward the unreliable (and power crazy) autopilot, which means we are mainly hand steering - what a pain!
