Exocet Strike - 5-6 February 2017

Last night we watched on our AIS plotter as one of the other boats in the fleet slowly overhauled us. Wishanger II is an Oyster 62, but modified in build to the original and current owners spec. With a different transom, which with Davits and other appendages measures more like 70 feet long. Anyway at daybreak they overtook us. Stella had a chat with Sam on the vhf to see which side they were going to overtake, and discovered that yesterday they caught and lost a Marlin! During the day we sailed in company until at lunchtime we had a call on the vhf to say they had to stop to haul in another fish they had caught. Took two hours and then the fish got away, snapped nearly 100m of 100lb line, must have been another big fish.
This meant that since they had motored on ahead we caught ten up again, and as the wind filled in we sailed in company, mad we still are, about 1/3 of a mile apart, very pleasant, better go and check how close we are. 0.4 miles now, they've just speeded up again.
We are now well under 300 miles to go, this means we should arrive sometime Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning at Salvador. Very welcome landfall will be. It's been easy sailing on this leg but a bit slow. However I think the next leg from Salvador to Cabadelo will be much more challenging and upwind, as will some of the leg up to Grenada, through the doldrums / ITCZ.
