Enigma - Day 3 - that was an interesting watch !

Subject: Day 3 - that was an interesting watch !
During the night the roller on the furling mechanism to the Simbo sail parted company from the bowsprit. The offending snap shackle had lost its bar and hence became a useless piece of junk in an instant. Why is it in sailing that these things happen only after we had thought, "we must check the rigging on that bowsprit" but decided to leave it till the morning. However Allan made good with various pieces of rope tying the roller to the bowsprit and decided to wait for light before attempting a proper repair.

Morning arrived and we replaced the rope with two large shackles, moused on for security. Of course it wasn't as straight forward as that sentence may imply. The sail was under load and what we thought would be an easy job somehow managed to get more complicated. We tried hard to keep Mr. and Mrs. Cock-up at bay, and I'm glad to say they stayed away....just.

Despite that, after a heroic struggle, we managed to secure the rig and set off again on our downwind dash. One of the bags that holds the Simbo sheets on the pulpit was lost but as someone commented, there's a dolphin somewhere with a designer handbag showing off to its mates. (Before i hear howls of derision I support the Green Blue )

We've seen no whales today yet but a few flying fish ( I believe they taste nice ) and shearwaters. Were making good progress and for a few minutes even had a bit of rain. The sail is polled out and everyone is catching up on reading. We've used our watches to carry out cleaning, further rig checks and improvements and have kept the day interesting.

Paul, Diane, Allan and Viv.
