Endeavour of Cork - Day 1 - The Atlantic!!

Day 1 - The Atlantic!

We got away!!!

Despite all the doom and gloom and depression, and a fear at one stage that we'd be flying home from Cape Verde - we finally got everything fixed and bought, got refuelled and at 12.25pm local time (23hrs 25mins after most of the rest of the fleet) we cast off and set sail for St. Lucia. Hurray!!

Within the hour we had a few small rigging issues ironed out, and are now tramping along at about 7kts under spinnaker, with blue skies, sunshine and in a lovely calm sea. We just have to round the southern end of Sto Antao island and head a little further north, and then that's us for approx. the next two weeks!!

The watch roster is being written up as I type (it'll be much the same as before), and we're making decisions along the way about spinnaker at night etc.

The aim now is to hunt down the backmarkers of the main fleet. We have started in much better conditions than they did (it was very light when they set off) so we're hoping that we can reel some of them in over the next few days. Another boat, True Blue started at the same time as us, and Orion got off about an hour or two before us, so we have some company around us.

I've just been informed that when I'm finished typing this, I'm on watch for two hours - and straight after that I'm on dinner duty - it's all happening for me on day one!!!

so now we just have to settle into our routines and look forward to two weeks at sea!!

From a VERY cheerful Endeavour!!

Over and out.
