Luna Quest - Friday, 27th March, 2015

Noon Position: 9.12S 136.05W

Logged run: 90 miles
Measured run: 110 miles

It is difficult to account for the difference in the logged and measured run (i.e. measured on the chart) other than that there is a southwesterly South Subtropical current that no doubt aids our mileage. Over a 24-hr period the current could have run at 1 knot accounting for the difference. The difference of the day before was similar, but 35 miles the previous day.

We are currently enjoying moderate breezes that give us a speed of around 5 knots, which could get us into Hiva OA Saturday night. As a rule we avoid landfalls at night, but the bay where we shall be joining earlier arrivals is reasonably easy to access (Taahuku Bay) without too much ship movement or background lights.

We have been advised that no fruit of vegetables can be on board on arrival so that any we might have, will have to be chucked overboard. Many of the islands are worried that their ecosystems will be upset by the introduction of foreign elements or species.

Eric
