Makena - Nov 12 - South of the Tropic of Cancer

Sarah here. I've passed to PW the job of doing the pro boat log but just in case there have been any issues with that I've booted up our power hog of a Mac machine that allows us to send in updates with SailMail while running Windows in a virtual machine. PW sends his using his own Iridium phone and a beast of an everything-proof routing laptop :) He gets interesting news for us such as the Route de Rhum win info - nice!

We've crossed the Tropic of Cancer since I last wrote and baby Kai has a 5th tooth! We thought a top incisor was going to come through for him today but on inspection there was a new one on the bottom row! I think that one on top might come join the rest tomorrow.

We did 176nm in our first 24 hours, 134 nm in the second and 150nm in the third. We are over the halfway mark in total miles. We have under 400 nm to go as I write this. The winds are healthier since this afternoon so hopefully we can pick up the pace.

Tuesday 11th we saw lots of tuna jumping, watched a beautiful sunset and passed the 8000nm mark for Makena. It's fun any time other ARC boats come on the VHF and have a little chat with us.

Wednesday 12th the day got going with red skies and radio chatter about a possible flare seen overnight. Since we are not on SSB we had missed all this. Later in the day the vessel Oynas reported that one of their crew had seen an impressive shooting star around the time and place of the reported incident so we really hope that is the explanation. We saw an incredible number of dolphins who played for a couple of hours at our bows and all around the boat. We will share pictures when we arrive in Cape Verde, we hope. Tonight was closed out with another stunning sunset and our fit octogenarian Jerry making us a lovely meal with the aid of his son as sous-chef. Luc made banana flambees and plates were as good as licked clean.

Until next time! Over and out!
