Slipping into the early morning mist

The sun was low in the sky and with mist still lying on the water, the ARC Portugal fleet slipped lines to gather for the 07.00 start of Leg 3 from Póvoa de Varzim to Figueira da Foz’ Despite light winds, most skippers chose to sail across the start line on their 75nm passage south along the Portuguese coast. Paulo Neves, President of the Clube Naval de Povoense, joined the Yellow Shirts on the committee boat and speaking on the VHF, he thanked ARC Portugal for their visit and wished them fair winds and safe trip to Figueira da Foz.

As the day progressed, the wind filled and boats with downwind sails were pleased to hoist them to take full advantage. Skippers described it as a ‘steady sail’ and some crews took advantage of this by casting their fishing lines in the hope of catching some tasty tuna. Both Sayonara and Majic-L were in luck, with Mark on Majic-L reporting that he, ‘had to stop the boat to allow Tony to reel it in!’. A’assifa were first to cross the finish line, but with other factors such as engine hours to be taken into consideration, final results won’t be known until the prize giving on Monday evening.

On Sunday, participants made an early start to take the coach to visit Montemor Castle and the city of Coimbra. Coimbra dates back to the Roman Empire and was the first capital for 200 years. It is well known for its University, which participants were able to visit, including its’ impressive library with intricate gold decor.

On their return to the marina, crews looked forward to a pontoon party, before their last full day in Figueira da Foz on Monday.
