Sweet Dream - Day 142 June 5, 2019

The wind came up in the night, but the mooring held fine. We loosed our lines at 08:00 and motored out through pass Paipai. It was quite a dramatic spot to traverse! With only 18 knots of wind it was really lumpy....we could imagine this pass being intractable after a few days of high winds. We enjoyed a wonderful sail to Bora Bora. After coming into the tame pass Teavanui in front of Bora Bora’s main town of Viatape, we motored to the west side of Motu Toopua. Our initial plan was to come round into Baie Tehou and drop our anchor where we stayed four years ago. Alas! That is off limits now. Too bad. We picked up a mooring ball in the scarily shallow (11 feet at some parts!) mooring field and paid our five dollars for a three day stay. It is a good deal...you can pick up a mooring for three day five dollars or a full week for ten. And they pick up rubbish and recycling daily! We kayaked over to the Conrad Hilton, pulled up on the pristine, empty, beach, put on shoes and proper clothing over our swimwear and walked up to the bar looking for happy hour. Ha! What a hoot! We were passed from server to server to receptionist to hotel concierge. Each person we met seemed astounded that we hadn’t called ahead (for happy hour in an empty bar?!?) and that we had arrived via kayaks. It was apparent that this particular management had never been invaded by pirates in kayaks before! In the end, we were told by a very uncomfortable young man that the hotel management could not host us today. Perhaps we would like to call ahead and set up day passes for tomorrow at the price of two hundred American dollars each? Ha hahaha. No thank you, we wouldn’t care to do that. Thank you very much. Just another fantastic example of Bora Bora’s fine hospitality. We paddled back to our boat, stowed the kayaks, and enjoyed a wonderful free happy hour, then Lars played the Uke while I cooked us a nice lasagna supper.
