Lexington - Captain Bob: Lombok tours

On the second day of our tour we went to Sembalan to stay at the Wisara Nusantara Hotel which was very nice. The plantings around the hotel were wonderful. There were orchids, roses, water lilies, amyarylis and surprise lilies. I will show in photos. The rooms were very basic, room (15x25), bed with one sheet, tv, bath and small porch. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel provided in a package. I wanted an extra butter for my toast for which I paid an extra 2,000 Indonesian dollar (rupees) which was 0.18 US dollars. We then went to the Sendang Gile Waterfalls near Mt. Rinjani, a tall (11,000+ feet) volcano mountain. It was the usual trek to see a water falls and get in the water.
Our guide and driver were very nice. The guide spoke good English but understood questions very poorly and responded with a yes or no even though the question was much more complicated. Then again I speak no Indonesian.
The driving thru the area was interesting to see all the activities and evidence of their culture. I will list striking features:
1. Scooters everywhere
2. Driving involves making three lanes out of a two lane road, scooters on the left and right and a passing car or truck in the middle.
3. Very neat and clean people surrounded in litter and meager housing.
4. Everyone is selling something. Coke advertising is in the smallest shops. French fried have been ever present thru out the World Arc.
5. A scooter with a driver, two children, mother and shopping packages is the equalivent of a minivan!
Photos: scooters everywhere, orchid in front of hotel, all the way from Kentucky to see a field of tobacco being sold to Phillip Morris.
May fair winds fill your sails with a driver instead of self driving in Lombok.
Bob
