Lexington - 3/30/17. Nuki Hiva tour

We went on a tour of Nuka Hiva today. Karen, Sam, Jack and I went on a driving tour across the island today. Jack is a 22 year old from Kent, Great Britain. We needed a fourth to do the tour so Jack was my guest so we could go. (His Mom reads my post; so if you are reading this, we are taking good care of your son. You have done a good job raising a real gentleman.) We went to Taipivai. This is the bay where Herman Melville stayed for a while. As always it was a beautiful bay. In the valley is Paeke, a beautiful archeological site with numerous stone tikis. The site was used as a meeting place for groups of people in the 1500's. They would meet for all kinds of purposes, including religious and political. We then went to Hatiheu, at the north of the island. This was the favorite bay of Robert Louis Stevenson, the Scottish writer. A statue of the Virgin Mary has been hoisted 1,000 feet up onto a spike of volcanic stone standing above the bay. We then went to the island's equalivant of the Grand Canyon called Terre Deserte. This goes up to Mount Tekao and overlooks the deep canyon of Tapueahu. I will send some photos (hopefully the labels will be with the right pictures!):
