Paw Paw - Log Day 228: The Price of a Contrary and Nomadic Life

Having watched the actual weather and compared this to the forecasts following our unplanned arrival in Nuiatoputapu on Sunday, we decided that tomorrow would be the best time to depart, based on the better direction of wind and swell that is forecasted and having seen evidence of the shift today.

So, with that decision made, it was time to clear out and say our goodbyes. It struck us that this is the first island where we have had so many locals to say our goodbyes to; people who have shown us nothing by kindness and invited us into their hearts and homes to share a meal or just have a chat; people who are happy to share what little they have. While we left our hearts in Samoa, we're definitely leaving something of ourselves behind here as well.

Tonight, under a spectacular starry night, on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, eating an Indian curry, drinking a South African wine, listening to Irish songs by "The High Kings" on the CD Elaine's dad bought her; songs like "Ireland's Shore" and "Galway Girl", then watching the movie, "Midnight in Paris", one can't help but have a feeling of surrealism and think about family who are so far away. Wishing that we were joining them all on their summer holiday to Galway or just spending time together in Arizona or South Africa. Maybe it's the sense of family that we've seen to be so paramount in Samoa and here in Nuiatoputapu that brings these thoughts to mind. Alternatively, it could simply be the acknowledgement that this is the price to pay for this contrary and nomadic, albeit enriching, lifestyle that we have chosen to lead!
