Majic-L - Majical Challenge Day 4

Lazy start to the day knowing that the rest of the week will be earlies. First task of the day for RIchard as skipper was to get out his passage plan that we had all looked at back home last week, the tide time books and the charts and rewrite it all to take into account the revised schedule now we knew we were leaving on Monday - hurrah!

Next up was to decide what to bake for the bake off competition - we wanted to be true to the spirit of the game so it was about what we could do with what we had on the boat.

On the way out to the shops, Richard compared notes with one of Jessica's crew whom was also rewriting their plan which was helpful for reassurance we had the right calculations.

Tony and I visited "Dave's Tackle" off the High St for a quick repair to his fishing rod. This was a real Aladdins Cave of all things fishing which was an eye opener for me as a very occasional participant. One thing that I thought was a good idea was he had a display of about 40 rods for sale of different types and prices, but were on racking with the cheapest at about £20 at the bottom to the most expensive at £200 at the top - very practical!

We picked a Swiss Roll as you could do that with a baking tray - the only implements we bought were a whisk and a sieve in pound world. We had to buy caster sugar and self raising flour as stuff not normally in the galley stores but otherwise made do with what we had. Next challenge was we had no scales - so a bit of lateral thinking required there!

Also no electric whisk meant we were passing the mixing bowl around as all had to be done by hand. The end result was brilliant - but not first time. Of course it wasn't a fan oven and the burners were on the bottom, so our first attempt looked perfect on top but distinctly burned underneath when we turned it out of the tray. Never mind, luckily we had left time to make another and that was great.

Really impressed with the turnout at the 3.30pm meeting - I was expecting maybe half a dozen cakes but not the case. What a great show and how quickly our little ARC community is coming together before we have even left!
When Richard came back from the skippers meeting to confirm the go, early evening meal on the boat (very nice Chilli that Linda had brought from home) and time to make what last minute preparations we could for tomorrow's 5am start - Bonsoir mes amis!
