Exploring the Azores with ARC Europe

02 June 2023

Most of the fleet who were on the start line in Bermuda have now arrived in the Azores with just 9 boats left to arrive. After a few days of sunshine and light wind, the weather is predicted to change with stronger winds forecast. Many boats are now planning to sail from Horta straight to Ponta Delgarda on Sao Miguel.

The first arrivals in Marina da Horta were welcomed with drinks at the famous Peter Cafe Sport, an iconic spot overlooking the bay and marina in Horta on the island of Faial. Peter’s has been run by the same family for three generations and is famous amongst cruisers around the world being the place to meet up with fellow sailors, have one of their infamous G&T’s and catch up on stories of adventures so far.

Some of the first arrivals took the opportunity to go on a half day tour of the island, visiting a volcano and viewpoints around Faial and learning about the island. They also enjoyed a crew supper at Canto da Doca restaurant where they were presented with a range of fish and meat to cook on hot volcanic rocks, a unique experience not to be missed!

The programme is repeated in Horta for the later arrivals with many joining the welcome drinks at Peter Café Sport and enjoying the sunshine yesterday evening, enjoying the tour of the island and joining their fellow crewmates from across the fleet at the crew supper this evening.
