Tick...Tick...Tick...Countdown to the start of ARC 2015

20 November 2015

Departure day is looming for ARC Crews in Las Palmas as the clock counts down to Sunday's start. The pontoons are bustling with activity as crews take delivery of provisions from supermarkets and the local fruit and vegetable market. It’s a colourful and busy spectacle when wandering around the marina. Most crews have now arrived and several yachts are leaving the port to go out sailing and to make the most of their time before the start to carry out crew training.

Yesterday hundreds of crew gathered to watch the search and rescue helicopter highline transfer. The skilful pilot winched a crew member on board and came very close to ARC crews watching from the northern breakwater of the marina. This was followed by a supervised deployment of flares where participants were able to bring along handheld flares no more than three months out of date to try, and any older out of date flares were disposed of safely by the ARC team.

Then in the swimming pool at the Club Varadero Maritimo there was an opportunity for crews to learn tips on emergency evacuation, watch a liferaft inflation demonstration and a chance to try boarding a liferaft, with guided practical sessions in the water.

After the demonstrations, the radio net controllers attended a briefing, and Pharmacist Sue Johnson held a drop in session to talk about crew health whilst at sea.

It's safe to say that anticipation is steadily building and most crews are all set for the off. This evening, the Gran Canaria Tourist Board will host a Farewell Cocktail Party to wish ARC crews bon voyage!
