Hummingbird blog
5 December
It's Friday 5th
of December and Hummingbird is firing on all cylinders. Squalls and accompanying
heavy winds and rain also gives us a speed of between 8-10kts and a veering wind
angle that put us right back on track after a few hours of having to sail
further south to keep the headsail from luffing. All worth a few wet bums and
complaints about the rain. Note that the best way to stop rainfall is to
struggle to put your rain gear on as it will then immediately stop until you
have the confidence to remove said rain gear, and then it will immediately start
again.
We are two weeks
in on our journey so certain emotions start to emerge in the crew, as we are
tired, a bit smelly, wet, and we just put up the new way point on the plotter
that shows we are 1000 miles to our next check point. A short group hug and a
piece of chocolate was required to restore us to regular
behaviour.
Skipper also
mentioned in his blog yesterday about Chef duty and I have the pleasure of this
joyous occasion today that happens to us every five days. It's actually called
Mother Watch, but I feel that there is a word missing after Mother that starts
with F.
The role
essentially consists of taking people below who don't normally cook, hiding
various ingredients in non-intuitive places and getting them to cook much
desired tasty meals including daily bread all while rocking and rolling at
various angles. It's a bit like an escape room game with no escape at the end,
mixed with various forms of corporal punishment. Fun!
The reward for
this weekly nightmare are some very nice compliments from the crew, irrespective
of what the food actually tastes like (it's more a mutual respect thing) and a
full twelve hours off to have a decent night's sleep. So roll on 7pm tonight!
See ya land
lubbers!
