Falcon - Crossing Day 8

Distance run last 24 hours 174 nautical miles. Miles until Grenada 847.

Our celebrations yesterday were not only fit for a king, Neptune that is, but also attended by a king. And not any old king either, but THE king, Elvis ‘Rex of Rock n’ Roll’ Presley! Fancy dress was mandated for Half-way Friday, and Helm Monkey dug out the Elvis suit for another airing (which was very much needed after the energetic dancing of the Las Palmas 70’s party). Bev raised spirits, and a few heartbeats, by donning her foxy pirate wench costume whilst Cap’n Ade, as far as I can tell, came as Dr Seuss’ ‘Cat in a hat’; bonnet-topped feline or otherwise, he cut a very fine figure of a partying skipper! In true naval tradition, tots of rum were broken out; the first dispatched overboard for Neptune, the next three shots surviving only seconds longer before the crew necked their allotted ration followed by a hearty ‘aaarrggghhhh’!

The party mood did not end there. Chef supremo Bev pulled out all the stops in the galley to serve us up king prawn curry followed by treacle pudding with vanilla sauce - what lucky boys we are aboard this boat of bounty! Bev continued the festivities as Hi-de-hi entertainments manager, and delivered a nautical themed quiz; Helm monkey showed both extraordinary knowledge and extreme lack of common sense by correctly answering the questions before the skipper had a chance to press his button - some unpleasant boat chores are anticipated for the impudent simian deckhand today!

Sailing-wise, with the wind forecast to be on the limits of the Bluewater Runner, we took the risk to continue flying the BFOS (see yesterday’s report for acronym) through the night; morning positional reporting from ARC control suggests our bold move has paid dividends with several miles gained against some boats of interest that we definitely aren’t racing!

Bev has designated tomorrow ’Spa Saturday’. The boys approach this with both intrigue and trepidation in equal measure… drop by to this log in 24 hours time to discover the transformation of Falcon’s scurvy sea-dogs into metrosexual sailpersons.
