Disa - New Crew Members Join Us Mid-Crossing

After our first few really rough days, the waves calmed down considerably and we felt more confident to let our sails out further and enjoy the breeze. When everything is fine on board, the wind and waves cooperating well, then it is really beautiful being at sea. We’ve been visited by dolphins, enjoyed some good food, good music and good books. Any day now I’ll be ready to take out my knitting.

Two days ago we were joined by new crew member, James, a healthy white stork who seemed a bit tired. He circled our boat many times before deciding that we would be good company. After trying out a few spots, he decided to settle down at the stern, sheltering in the lee of our outboard engine. He’s not a very talkative crew member, but good at keeping watch, his beady eye always on the lookout for flying fish. Yesterday James was reunited with his love, Judith. He spotted her in the cloudless sky and immediately flew off to meet her. They flew around like turtle doves on a china plate, darting and diving together. James was eager to show Judith their new home so he circled round the boat a few times and then showed her where to land. Judith was a bit reticent, flapping in the sky above us. True gentleman that he is, James flew up again and gave her another demonstration of the landing technique. This time she landed gracefully and joined him at the stern of the boat. There they stand like sentinels, leaning into every wave and scanning the sky together. This morning they stretched their wings, flying gracefully in the dawn sky. Then they repeated their previous manoeuvre, circling the boat a few times, then coming in to land. They seem completely at home and it seems that their destination is also Grenada.

We’re having to do a few running repairs to our boat. Every day there seems to be something that isn’t working quite as it should. Mostly we have enough spares and Darrol is able to Magiver a fix. A couple of days ago our fridge stopped working. Fortunately we have a really big freezer, but sadly lost some good cheese. It’s a bit disappointing not to to have chilled cold-drinks any more, and we are very much looking forward to those cold rum punches promised by the ARC when we reach Grenada. Our speed has increased in anticipation. In the meantime we’re grateful for glorious weather, good progress and our very sea-kindly boat.
