Moonflower 3 - Final Charge

The difficult decision was made yesterday afternoon to turn the motor on, to ensure we finished the race on time. We’re pretty confident we will have among the least engine hours of the 50+ boats in the ARC, but it was a tough choice nonetheless. Unfortunately, this patch of whafty, inconsistent wind persisted too long for us to make the final stone’s throw to St Lucia before the event's closing ceremony.

But even in these final chapters of our tail, we’ve been dealt some interesting cards by the ocean. Another flying fish attempted to decapitate Carrie Cushion last night whilst on watch, instead knocking her night cap beverage all over the deck. We can say with relative certainty that none of us have ever before, or ever will, be woken up in the middle of the night by a series of vehement profanities, followed by a shriek of, ‘The flying fish spilt my chocolate milk!’. The aforementioned flying fish was promptly returned to the sea, the chocolate milk sadly didn’t make it.

Our final morning has been full of similar excitement: with less than 100 miles to go, we succeeded in catching our first tuna! Whilst we’ve been very lucky with reasonably regular dorado, plenty of flying fish, and one mature cheddar which escaped (see previous blog post), catching a tuna on the Atlantic has been something we’ve all been hoping for since day 1. It also makes a wonderful meal replacement, to what would otherwise have been plain cous cous and a tin of kidney beans to share.

Our ETA is 7.00pm local time in St Lucia. All other boats have now finished, so we will ensure we bring up the rear in suitable style. To any other crews reading this: we’ll look forward to seeing you for a sunset rum punch later!

We’ll post some final thoughts tomorrow to sum up the trip, until then, thanks so much for sticking with us all the way to the ribbon. Support back home has been amazing.

Lots of love,

Your Moonflowers
