BLOG 14 – What a Waste

Tuesday night: Martin made scones. It is too calm for drop-scones. Delicious, of course.

The boat is stable, and things stay where you put them. If you want to play this one at home, go into your bathrooms...

Sorry, someone just chucked a bucket of water through the cabin window.

...and slam the door; that’s more wind than we are getting. If you run a bath, sit in it, and reach for the hot tap, then that would make a bigger wave than we’ve seen all day.

We saw a brown whale at lunchtime; we are guessing it was about 10 metres long, but that may increase with time.

People have asked us about using a water-maker (to filter salt out of seawater), and carrying so much plastic. We made a decision, early on, not to use one, due to the possibility of failure, or contamination. Everything that uses electricity is a concern as we have to run the engine to charge the batteries. Having made that decision, we have to account for our recycling practices. Here’s what we do:
The plastic is separated from the tins, and thrown over the port side.
The tins get thrown over the starboard side.

JOKING JOKING JOKING.

All cans and tins are washed in salt water, and crushed with a wooden crusher, held together with sash cord.
Plastic is separated from the lids, and compacted inside a bottle. We have been assured that this complies with the policy in Saint Lucia.
Landfill is kept to a minimum, cut, and squashed into a container, which still has space after almost a week.

Fishing: no fish have been harmed in the making of the voyage, yet.

We saw an exploding meteor, in Gemini, last night, and are hoping for a new moon to be frowning on us, tonight.

Octopus and cockle paella, today; as you would expect, the food has been exquisite, but sadly, the crew will have to do some cooking, once the fresh food runs out (I buttered some scones, last night, but that probably doesn’t count).

Restaurant Martin Wishart we’re hosting a lunch for the Cure Parkinson’s Trust, today; we hope to have some news of how that went. Communications have been patchy, from the boat, so please spread the word about the cause.

That’ll do.
Rupert
