Sweet Dream - Day 208 August 11, 2019

The most perfect cruising day ever! We let go the lines in Mackay marina at 09:30, with Cole and Marge sending us off with waves and good wishes. We sailed with just the Genoa in 15-18 knots of wind almost to our destination at Goldsmith island. Talk about champagne sailing! It was the most delightful journey we’ve had in months! Captain sat on the bow and spotted some dolphins. We anchored in 18 feet of water on a good sand bottom. As we were backing down on the hook, a huge turtle appeared just above where we’d dropped. It took a breath, tucked it’s head down, surfaced, took another breath and looked directly at me as if to say, “yep, it looks good, now I’ll dive on it to be sure”, and went down. We sighted it several more times after that while we waited our hour to be sure of the anchor set. After dropping the kayaks in, we paddled over to the beautiful beach. Although there was one other boat, a catamaran, in the bay, we had the beach to ourselves. The sand was soft and warm, the beach was wide, and backed with lots of varieties of cedars, pines, and deciduous trees . Sea eagles soared overhead, and then we saw some odd tracks in the sand. Lars said, “do you suppose those are crocodile tracks?” I made a quick beeline to the kayaks in reply. Back on the big boat, we had the most spectacular sunset show with whales breaching and dolphins leaping to the tune of curlews calling their night song. It was magical!
