Laura Dawn - French Polynesia Log 2: Shredded!

That's it.. Holly our spinnaker has given up and completely shredded! She was barely unrolled last night when she developed a critical split straight down the middle panel of the sail, which then essentially tore out the panel. We lost some to sea, but were able to get the rest rolled and dropped safely. The winds were in good range and the split was in the panel where all the repairs had been as well: unfortunately it looks like a weakness in that panel that has caused the decline of our dear Holly.

We had put 2 reefs in the main to go with the spinnaker, and just rolled out the headsail to get by with. As it turned out, the wind picked up and we hit squall central, which had she been up would have been not so easy to deal with. Nothing crazy but up to 30 knots of wind with side on swell made a bit of an uncomfortable ride for our night sail up to Nuku Hiva from Tahuata. We made it though just before 8 this morning with all being well.

Everyone's feeling the night shifts again and naps are definatley required. Tomorrow we have the official welcome party for the Marquesas and prize-giving for the leg. We are hoping we might have come close for estimating our arrival time and date (we were pretty close considering its a 21 day passage), so here's hoping!

We've bumped in to lots of the fleet around town today and its so nice to see all our friends again, especially Melike and Nejat from North. Looking forward to a beer with everyone tomorrow and hearing their Pacific stories..

a very tired LD tonight: 28th March 18:25
