I’m
currently under a blanket in the cockpit with my ipod, looking at stars while on
watch with my mom, who is the lookout at the moment. Who by the way was just
attacked by one of those fish with wings. It just flew right in between her and
her seat. So one of our comfort-seats kind of smells like fish now. Or maybe
it’s my mom. Earlier this morning, while doing a stroll on deck, we picked up 14
flying fish on deck. Fourteen! Those poor things, I mean, with an ocean this
big, what’s the chance of hitting this one, tiny sailboat invading their space
when they’re out flying. Which is also weird because they are fish and should be
out swimming, not flying.
Today
the waves have been hitting us from the side, creating a new, fun movement of
the boat, and I’ve really had to concentrate to keep clear of seasickness. Which
really does take a whole lot of concentration, when there’s stuff I swear we
fastened tight, just flying around like we’re in outer space. And there was this
one mango that had gotten bad, that I left on the counter just for a few seconds
before going to throw it out, when it suddenly was just gone. Like completely
vanished, didn’t even hear it slide down behind the stove, turning into
something more of a mango-mousse. Sorry, mom. Again.
But
hey, the everyday temperature is still 28 degrees, and the spray of saltwater
that hits me while taking a nap in the cockpit every now and then is actually
kind of refreshing. We’ve started taking “showers” on the back deck behind the
rutter – with a bucket of seawater to pour over ourselves, and a rope so we
don’t accidently have to go for a swim. It’s the best kind of showering. Right
now, the sea is actually calm, the sky is clear and this nightlife at sea isn’t
too bad. And yesterday, when I was talking about how we’re heading north-east, I
was of course kidding. At least I hope I was, because you could say that Saint
Lucia is slightly west of our position at the moment.
