Crazy Free Charts One problem with both paper and electronic charts is that they are sometimes based on old surveys. This is particularly evident when one is entering a channel (visually) only to discover that one's position on the chart plotter has the boat traveling across land. A very elegant, although somewhat difficult to learn how to do, solution is to overlay Google Earth satellite data on one's electronic charts. When the charts are accurate the satellite data and the chart are aligned. When not, well, you get the picture.

Paul Higgens has come up with a method to use Google Earth and OpenCPN to produce hybrid charts. The advantage over the normal Google Earth plugin for OpenCPN is that you don't need an Internet connection while using the charts. I have posted the links and downloads and a brief explanation at http://blog.sailboatreboot.com/2014/11/crazy-free-charts.html
