Hi everyone,
We, Husband and wife have just sailed from Australia to Hawaii, where we are now. We were heading straight to Victoria on Vancouver Island in BC Canada. But had to stop in Hawaii to get the bad fuel we got in Vanuatu cleaned before continuing on. We would like to get to Canada asap. But as it is so late in the season now, we are unsure of when to head off. Does anyone have any advice or comments about heading off as early as January. This is when we would ideally like to leave. We have checked out the pilot charts and they look okay for January (in fact better than for March). Has anyone sailed there at this time of year? Any tips and or information would be greatly apprieated. We have a 38' ketch that sails really good to windward. We know it will be cold but is there anything else we should know about.
Cheers from S/V "GYPSEAS TWO"

This is a dangerous trip to make in January. The entire North Pacific spends most of its time from November through April much like a blender on pure' After you clear the trade winds and start running your easting down to approach Juan de Fuca Strait you can expect heavy seas and gale force winds. The Japan current running across the wind as you approach the coast and heavy wave systems from the west will give you speed but ensure an unhappy voyage if not a dangerous and risky one.

The best time to make the passage from Hawaii to Vancouver or points north is from May through the end of August. However, expect significant calm caused by the North Pacific high during those months, and as much as 600 NM windless stretch. The size of the high increases through late August, so May/June is best overall. Fair winds
