Buying a Jeanneau 45 in Phuket next month and looking at cruising (after shakedown in Phuket area) down west coast of Sumatra checking some of the surf spots and even continuing onto Lombok to visit Browny a mate from Pt lincoln who lives there. Returning to Thailand by Decemeber.
Firstly is this practical and where are some good sources to get cruising and weather info I need. Thanks

Hi Dave,

If you're in Phuket, try to find Leon Bowles who used to own YSE Marine Engineering in the Boat Lagoon (the Volvo licenced dealer). He sold that business about 18 months ago, bought a yacht, and did almost exactly what you're talking about with his family last year (not sure if they surfed a lot, but the route was similar). He's back in Phuket now, and he's very approachable (especially if you offer a beer or two).

The guys at YSE will know how to contact him, or if they don't one of the other foreign owned businesses will know.
