We are thinking about sailing a motorsailer we have yet to purchase from Honolulu to Ocean City,Md via Panama Canal. Any routing ideas would be appreciated. The boat has a range of about 5,000 miles motoring, so we could treat this as a power boat experience only . She should make about 7 knts.

First and foremost, but Jimmy's Route book- you will refer to it plenty on such a voyage. Honolulu to Panama is a long trip- about 5000 miles, so you should plan on a route that lets you sail some or a lot. Motoring into the trades in the middle of the ocean is no fun at all. Essentially you will head down to about 5ºN, then turn East. At 7 knots, you are looking at a full month at sea. From Panama to MD is certainly doable, but you have a small window to get it done. If you want to take your time and cruise, it could be a great trip. If you are just delivering, you might consider shipping your new boat to MD from HI, or maybe sailing it to California then trucking it across the states. It would be quicker and maybe cheaper, especially if you plan to motor much of the way at today's fuel prices. And no wear and tear on the boat, no extra 1000's of hours on the engine...
