ARC Europe Weather Bermuda-Azores 26 May 2018

Weather: Bermuda to Azores
Prepared: May 26 05:37UTC

Synopsis: Elongated cold front extends SW from 60N/25W to 31N/55W in association with a gale near S Greenland. The S edge of this front will lift well north of Azores by 27th, as a Low develops near 55N/25W.

A second Low with a cold front extending W into NE USA will strengthen to a storm as it moves off the Newfoundland coast the midday 26th. This storm will gradually weaken into a gale as it moves SE of S Greenland on 29th, as its associated cold front moves E across Azores, weakening.

Broad ridging currently extends SW to 30N/40W from High over Azores. High will strengthen slightly thru 27th, broadening thru 30th as it move S to near 30N, with a moderate ridge axis then extending E to Gibraltar.

A very broad trough of low pressure currently extends from N Algeria NW across the Iberian Peninsula into Biscay. This trough will organize into a weak Low today over Biscay, where it will remain stationary and dissipate thru 28th.

Conclusion: A cold front will be gradually moving E across a majority of the grids over the next couple of days. The strongest SW winds will be across Grids II, JJ, LL and NN, with moderate to freshening winds expected. As the cold front passes, expect winds to gust into the middle 20s across Grids II, JJ and NN, (briefly gust into lower 30s, evening of 27th across Grid LL). Across Grids KK and MM, winds will be more gentle to moderate with occasional gusts to near 20kts as the cold front will weaken and begin to lift N around the time the front reaches these two grids. The largest swell will be found across Grids JJ, LL and NN as this will be the grids that will see the strongest influence from this front. Swell across these grids are expected to briefly reach as high as 9ft on 28th, before lowering for a brief time on 29th. Lighter swell will prevail across Grids II, KK and MM with mainly 4-7ft swell expected during the course of the forecast period.
