Timshel - Fiji Vanua Balavu

We elected to stay in the Lomolomo anchorage on Monday having things to fix - e.g. the Lewmar hatches as two hinges one on the fore and one on the aft had broken in quick succession. Most of the other boats set off for the other side of the island which was much more sheltered. But we did spend a very convivial evening as we were invited aboard Zeeland by Bianca and Edwin. Tuesday we set off in convoy with cats Laura Dawn and Sumore, Andrew in LD piloting us in the lead (Stefano was also aboard) and us in the middle, having entered the 20 or so waypoints provided. Lovely day, beautiful scenery but even following one did have to concentrate on the navigation with reefs all around. Eventually we arrived and anchored off the village of Dalicoli with the rest of the fleet. Ashore at 5pm for the meal arranged at the village, we tied the dinghy to a tree. Everything was arranged in a covered grassy area, beautifully decorated. Two buffet tables of food, an area for dancing and an area for ceremonial/Kava drinking. A lady explained everything, there was a ceremony with the village elders, dancing demonstrations, some of the guys joined in the Kava drinking (rather them than me!) and of course the delicious food. The people are so kind, there were even some villagers stationed on the beach with a big torch to help us with the dinghies when we returned to our boats. Next day we were all ashore for 9.00 for a tour of the village and the school which is being rebuilt after hurricane Winston, our gifts for the school were presented the previous evening. The children were wonderful, so enthusiastic, even in the temporary classroom. Next we wended our way back to the beautiful Bay of Islands (the local one). Magical scenery, lots of tiny limestone corally islands massively undercut (sort of mushroom shaped) but wooded, with lots of little channels to explore by dinghy, some snorkelling though there were a lot of tiny stinging jelly fish just hatching. We spent a magical couple of days with lots of socialising, especially as we were invited for dinner and planning discussions with the catamarans on Misto.
