Wilhelm und Astrid - Vielen Dank!
After thirty years, Wilhelm and Astrid Greiff have retired from their role as ‘Buero Deutschland’ for World Cruising Club.
Wilhelm and Astrid have been a feature of the ARC in Las Palmas since 1994, with Wilhelm on the safety team conducting safety equipment inspections, and Astrid helping welcome the German-speaking crews and German media.
The couple started their long association with World Cruising Club when they participated in the Europa ‘92 round the world rally with their yacht Octopus, circumnavigating double-handed. Returning home after the rally, they joined a Swiss syndicate, sailing the ‘best bits’ of two further circumnavigations.
The friendship with Jimmy Cornell forged on Europa ’92 led to a change of life, with Astrid translating Jimmy’s books and Wilhem using his expertise in electronics to develop marine electrical systems and publish several sailing books. As part of the World Cruising Club family, Wilhelm and Astrid have been the main point of contact for German speakers on the phone, email and at events like Boot.
As always, Wilhelm and Astrid have busy diaries – there are vines to be tended and wine to be made, dogs to be walked and a trip to Romania planned. Whatever they choose, everyone at World Cruising Club wishes the Greiffs the very best for the future and hearty thanks for their dedication and expertise.
Fair winds and following seas, dear friends.
