Nordik Light - Near Key West, Thursday, May 11, 2017

Near Key West, Thursday, May 11, 2017So here we are, motor sailing along at 9 knots on a course of 350M, recently emerged from the Old Bahama Channel.  The current ran a knot or more against us all night and is against us now, as we run up the east side of Cay Sal Bank.  This crewman thinks we will begin to find less current against us as we head for the main body of the Gulf Stream, where we will get a on board for a 3+knot boost north.  First time sailing in this area, but third crossing of the GS, the world’s largest river.  It is a beautiful day, with a sunny sky, a few small, scattered clouds and fairly calm seas, swells 2 to 3 feet. With the favorable conditions forecast, we had left M dock at Nanny Cay at 0800 Saturday, as planned and were soon leaving the. read more...

Nordik Light - Thursday, May 4, 2017 Log

The last several days have involved attending ARC’s briefings on provisioning, flares, liferafts and the inspection of Nordik Light for preparedness for offshore passage making.  The hole in the foredeck has been sealed up in a very neat repair for the wires powering the staysail’s furling motor.  There was some sorting out with regard to polarity of the wiring and when that was all good, crew had a chance to practice inspecting the deck gear while underway and made sure the staysail sheets got their usual several wraps around the roller-furled sail.  We did fine on the inspection and came away with some helpful tips, like taping the pelican hooks on the side gates to ensure none come open unexpectedly.  And Inspector Peter’s approvals of most of the gear and. read more...

Nordik Light - Crew Gathering for Nordik Light

Sunday, April 30, 2017Supposed to get up at 5am, but didn’t sleep well and was awake at 4:14.Got up 4:40;Sally was awake too.I trimmed my beard, shaved with Sally’s leg razor, mine being packed away, and showered.Had sea bag already closed up and downstairs by the front door, along with my backpack-carry-on.Jeans, shoes, socks by front door, I was dressed and the taxicab-minivan was there.Two young guys, one quiet, going home at the end of his shift and one more talkative driver. Got to the airport (JFK) without incident, at the Delta International terminal.Checked bag after waiting maybe 15 minutes.The counter people were friendly.Headed for the gates, going through security where some people had to remove shoes, some didn’t.I didn’t.I walked, took a shuttle bus to terminal C, found the. read more...
