Misto - Days 160-163 June 16-19: Paradise found on Taveuni, Fiji

We departed Bay of Islands for Welagilala, the only true atoll in Fiji. The wind was blowing strongly in the mid to upper 20's, the seas got up somewhat and it was a beautiful beam reach and we revelled in a fantastic sail. However we were to be disappointed in our destination. Probably a beautiful option in settled weather, the seas were breaking heavily over the reef and so the Owl and the Pussy Cats (Laura Dawn, Sumore and Misto) along with Tula Mohr, decided to press on to Matangi.

The horseshoe shaped anchorage on the north of Matangi is described as idilic. Arriving as the light was starting to go Laura Dawn explored the anchorage but found it infested with coral and certainly not suitable for 5 boats to find safe anchoring in those poor light conditions. So we pressed on again to an anchorage on the north side of Qamea where several other boats were anchored. The wide bay with a sandy beach was a welcome sight as the sun went down.

The next day the three cats decided to explore Matangi island and the resort there. A damp dingy ride of about 1.5 nm got us there and we were welcomed with 5 star
luxury. As we stayed for lunch we had the run of the resort and we relaxed and enjoyed the wonderfully pampering atmosphere. After an excellent lunch we walked up the high hill behind the resort to view Matangi bay from on high - and our earlier impression of a beautiful turquoise bay, but with a lot of coral there was confirmed.

The following day we moved down the coast of Taveuni island to Paradise Taveuni resort. Although we had to anchor as all the mooring balls were taken, this indeed proved to be a little piece of paradise. With incredibly welcoming, enthusiastic and friendly staff this resort offers a relaxing atmosphere with activities such as diving and a tour around the island to the Tavoro waterfalls, which we took along with several other WARC boats and some other resort guests. It was a lovely opportunity to see the island and we hiked up to view the three waterfalls, getting some much needed exercise. The day was topped off by a Fijian evening with dancing and kava drinking.
