Paw Paw - Log Day 104: An Abrupt End to Our Respite

Although we have sailed thousands of miles to get to this part of the world, we have been somewhat disappointed by the fact that, during this WARC "independent sailing time", we have been unable to linger longer in the various anchorages and become better acquainted with the islands and their people. The primary reason for this has been the weather.

In the Marquesas Islands most of the anchorages were susceptible to a very uncomfortable swell and torrential rain showers which washed mud and debris down the rivers and into the anchorages. The few that were protected had very few residents and no services. All of which restricted our stay.

Unfortunately the weather has, once again, dictated a premature departure and curtailed our stay in Rangiroa. Since we want to make the Tahiti Rendezvous in order to attend the Dinner and Prize-giving for the Galapagos to Marquesas Leg and, since we have plans to meet our friends, Olga and Denis, th ere, we decided it was best to set sail with the reasonable weather window that has opened up after the tropical depression passed a few days ago, rather than run the risk of getting stuck in the Tuamotos due to more bad weather that is forecasted.

So, with our respite having come to an abrupt end, tonight, under a full moon and in the company of Into the Blue and Corango, we are heading for Tahiti. Unfortunately, since we were restricted by the conditions in the Tiputa Pass, we had a much later start than what we would normally plan for a 220NM passage. This has had the knock-on effect of us having to reduce our speed to ensure a daylight arrival and will, therefore, mean a second night at sea. Oh the joys of a sailing lifestyle!
