ARC+ Transforming Marina Mindelo

15 November 2015

ARC+ arrivals in Mindelo are almost complete with only three yachts left to complete their passage. The 50 boats already berthed in Mindelo are creating a spectacle with colourful dress over flags and creating vibrant atmosphere with crews congratulating and sharing stories from their first sail together as a fleet.

A period of lighter winds followed the good sailing conditions experienced after the start from Las Palmas making for a frustrating period at sea for many. The lesser winds did however provide the opportunity for some fishing with reports of crew catching Marlin, Mahi Mahi and Tuna.

“What shall it be for lunch today? Fish tacos? Mahi sliders? Dorado curry stew? Perhaps there will be enough for all good options.” - Widago

With arrivals 24 hours day, the rally team and marina dock masters have been available to welcome every boat providing berthing instructions and offering assistance in what can be windy marina to manoeuvre within. Once berthed, most have been enjoying a well-deserved drink at the floating bar in the marina before exploring the town.

Leg 1 (Las Palmas to Mindelo) hasn’t been without its trials. A mixture of issues including broken forestays, damaged autopilots and engine loss are amongst the more serious of problems, whilst others require simple sail repairs before setting off next Wednesday. The facilities and services in Mindelo are catering well for those who require fixes and are prioritising ARC+ yachts in order to see them depart on time next week.

Whilst the remainder of the boats make landfall, last night crews were invited by Marina Mindelo for a welcome function on the dockside where local music and dancing greeted the fleet providing a taste of the local culture. Words of welcome from Marina Manager Lutz Meyer-Scheel and Port Captain Antonio Monteiro encouraged crews to explore the islands with the time they have but to relax before setting sail to St Lucia.

After departing Las Palmas late due to rigging problems, the last yacht to arrive in Mindelo will be the Beneteau First 40 ‘Arriba’, expected to arrive on Monday evening.
