Mischief - The Start of our World ARC Adventure

Well here we are on the second day of the first leg of the World ARC to Santa Marta, Columbia.

Yesterday we started at Midday in torrential rain and strong winds, not what it said in the brochure. We were not helped by over indulging at the farewell party the night before. Despite us all being soaked the skin, which probably helped sober us up, we made a good start and were 4th over the line. We sailed out of Rodney Bay and down to Castries before turning for South America, only 800 miles away. After a few squalls during the night today greeted us with sunshine and good winds, we are sailing downwind at between 8 and 11 knts on a long rolling sea. We are flying a code 0 poled out and a full main on a preventer and a genoa. This is a sail plan introduced by Alf on our crossing of the Atlantic and is now a firm favorite of the crew. It has given us a first 24hrs run of 180 miles which is great. Wendy Mick, Trevor and Myself are settling in to watches even though it has not been easy to sleep. This is due I think to a mixture of excitement, the heat and the sea state. Trevor especially has been spending most of his time making fishing lures and playing with his tackle. We were beginning to doubt if there were fish in the sea when suddenly we caught 2 good size Dorado at the same time. Mayhem ensued but eventually both were landed ,dispatched and filleted ready for diner tonight, and probably tomorrow night as well.

Cheers

David - Mischief
