Timshel - Tanna Port Resolution

The early arrivals at the head of the fleet got to do the volcano trip on the Tuesday afternoon. The slow coaches had a lovely guided walk around the village. It is a beautiful setting, they have lovely gardens but they are rebuilding after the destruction caused by cyclone Pam 2 years ago. Most of the houses are built of plaited palms, easy to replace. We went to a beautiful beach - white sand beach (as opposed to the black sand at the anchorage) and several of us booked to eat at the little restaurant there the following night. It was great meeting the children as they came out of school. Next day Steve took Ros (from Misto) and I over to the cliffs in the dinghy to see if we could get a warm swim near where the hot springs came out of the cliff - and indeed we found a warm pool among the rocks we could sit in, but you have to choose carefully as the water comes off the cliff at boiling point so you need to have enough cold seawater mixed in but not too much. In the afternoon it was our turn for the Volcano trip. It was awesome! You felt the pressure wave, then heard the boom, then saw the glowing lava bombs in a great red shower. And it got more spectacular as it got dark. It was amazing (even in the rain). On Thursday we visited the school, listened to the children sing and took some things for the children, Lexington's contribution being most substantial as they had persuaded Lexmark to donate 8 lap tops. Then there was the Ceremonial Welcome from the village and more wonderful singing and dancing. We were all given flower decorated woven palm hats, the whole path had been decorated. The exchange of gifts took place on the lawn by the yacht club. We had been given a list of what they needed and although nobody brought a lawnmower there were 4 wheelbarrows (it was quite hilarious watching 3 or 4 WARC skippers trying to put these together) 3 of which had been brought by the smallest boat Ain't Fancy, 2 guitars, a tent, many solar lights, snorkell gear, fishing gear, machetes, shovels, axes and other tools, flipflops and lots of other useful items. The hats and the welcome would have been enough, but in return we received decorated raffia bags and plaited palm baskets full of lovely fresh vegetables and fruit. In the evening there was the feast at the yacht club.
