Misto - Day 83 Nuku Hiva, Taiohae and second place on Leg

After arriving the previous night in the rain, March 29 dawned bright and sunny and stayed that way!

The program started at 2 pm and we were greeted with palm lais, necklaces of local seeds, singing and dancing. There was a tasting session of local food and a demonstration of how breadfruit is cooked in the fire, peeled, pounded to a consistency of thick mashed potato and then steeped in coconut milk - it was very tasty.

There were demonstrations by local artisans of various crafts.

Later in the afternoon we had an excellent briefing on the Tuamotos by Cameron and Cibele and then dinner and prize giving with entertainment. The local dinner dishes included local wild pig and goat which had been cooked for most of the day in palm leaves, many different presentations of banana and tuna in coconut milk and sashimi. There was also a manioc dish as well as the breadfruit from earlier. There were a couple of speeches from local dignitaries.

The prize giving revealed that Misto achieved second place in the cat division for the last leg. We were very proud of this achievement as it is the longest leg of the World ARC. A big thank you to Carl for helping us achieve this. We will be sorry to see him leave us on April 1.

The highlight of the evening was the traditional dancing. Expression of the Marquesan culture was suppressed for many years and it was only in the 1980's that the traditional culture again emerged. The dancing was incredible for its power and beauty and the bird dance was particularly engaging. It was a magnificent expression of the local culture and a really memorable evening.

Regards
Ros
