Boni Venti - LOG DAY SEVEN - A QUIET SUNDAY ON THE ATLANTIC

The wind increased to 20 kts at 23.20 so the engine was turned off and we sailed with one reef in the main and full genoa. The reef came out of the main at 4am and the wind stayed at 11-12 kts all day, so a leisurely sail with the genny poled out and making around 5 kts. Forecasted to stay at 7-12 kts for the next couple of days.

We receive three emails from ARC Rally Control each day through the Fleet Broadband system, which connects to Boni Venti through a satellite communication system. The first email at 09.00 gives the weather forecast for the next 48 hrs, the second at midday lists the position of all boats in the ARC & distance to go to St Lucia, and the third at around18.00 gives an update on the movements within the fleet, retirements, any issues with specific yachts, routing to Cape Verde etc. So we have a clear picture of how the Rally is progressing and the upcoming weather.

It was a relaxing day on Boni Venti today -  a late morning brunch of bacon, scrambled eggs, toast & fruit as the air temperature rose to 26.5 degs – almost time to put up the bimini! Lots of sealife to entertain us – flying fish, porpoises around the bow (see photo below) but sadly no fish on the line. Robert fired up his ipod on the sound system – on shuffle, and ironic that the first song to play was ‘Where are we now?’ by Frankie Goes to Hollywood! Indeed, where we are now is 150 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands with just under 2,000 miles to go to St Lucia.

Pre-dinner cocktails in the cockpit – out comes the Bombay Sapphire & tonic and the rum & coke – followed by chicken, roast potatoes and green beans. We’re hoping that the wind will improve tomorrow but we’ve got a calm night ahead so a good sleep in the offing.

All the best

Jonathan.
