Paw Paw - Log Day 79: "Don't Judge a Book by its Cover"

We woke to a cloudy, rainy day as well as the anchorage emptying out as WARC yachts headed for the rendezvous in Huku Hiva. However, by mid-morning the rain had passed, the clouds had lifted and the sun peeked through, revealing the most stunning scenery. I guess the Bay of Virgins lived up to its reputation after all. Excited to get a shore and explore, we launched the dinghy and headed to the concrete pier neatly tucked behind a small breakwater. With only 600 inhabitants, it didn't take long to see the little settlement and walk out of town to enjoy the surroundings.

En route a car stopped to greet us and introduce themselves. What followed next was something very unexpected - The driver asked us if we would like a freshly baked baquette. Is the Pope Catholic? Of course, but when Roy went to pay him he said "No, consider it a gift". It was such a lovely gesture coming from people that have so little as it is and has placed Futu Hiva in our hearts. I guess it was a case of "don't judge a book by its cover".

This afternoon we welcomed a whole new group of WARC yachts to the anchorage and lent a helping hand to get them all safely anchored, given how we struggled yesterday with little to no help from the WARC yachts that were here.

This evening we enjoyed sundowners on Do Over - Thank you Paula and Dan. Unfortunately we were rudely interrupted when Roy, Dan and Tim from Belafonte, along with Daniel, a full-time cruiser who helped us yesterday, went to the rescue of a yacht that was towed into the anchorage after losing its means of propulsion. Thankfully, using dinghies to steer the yacht they managed to get the single-handed sailor anchored safely for the night.
