Misto - September 20-October 7 2018: Christmas island and Cocos Keeling

Arriving in Flying Fish Bay just before midnight we picked up one of the remaining mooring balls and were joined a few hours later by Mischief who rafted up with us. Flying Fish Bay is somewhat dominated by the port operations for the Phosphate mining operation that is the main source of employment on the island. Despite this the waters are brilliantly clear and visibility was tremendous.

Ashore we enjoyed the tour arranged by WARC which really introduced us to the world renowned natural features of the island. The most famous of these being the red crabs and their annual migration. We were fortunate to see Red crabs and the huge Robber Crabs, even though is was not migration time. We enjoyed other natural sights including the blow holes. After the tour we took ourselves to the local museum situated in the old Governor's house and learnt about the history of the island.

Our stay was only supposed to last 48 hours, however Misto's was extended by 12 hours as we received news of damage we had sustained at home in hurricane Florence and so Ros made hasty arrangements to fly home. Howard, Martin and Helen then sailed Misto on to Cocos Keeling.

Cocos Keeling is a beautiful, remote coral atoll and the furthest west territory of Australia. The brilliantly clear, warm water makes it a water lovers paradise. There are a number of small islands surrounding the lagoon, but only West and Home islands are inhabited and the only anchorage is off the uninhabited Direction Island. Snorkeling in "the Rip" reveals some of the best underwater fish life and coral that we have seen. There are also giant clams and wrecks that are great snorkeling opportunities. Grilling on the beach and watching the sunset is about the most energetic activity that you really want to undertake on this beautiful hideaway! The fleet departed on October 1, but Misto remained to wait for Ros' return on October 6. We departed on the evening of October 7 after Ros had had the opportunity to enjoy some of the delights of this tiny island paradise.
