Salamander - Watch Patterns

With six crew onboard we have the luxury of having two people on watch all the time. Given that we are hand steering the whole way and not using Autopilot at all it's helpful to have this many people available.

The six crew are divided into three watches. Each watch has two hours on and four hours off every six hours. This means we are on watch four times every twenty four hours on a continuous basis.

I'm paired with Andrew and our watches are 0400 to 0600, 1000 to 1200, 1600 to 1800 and 2200 to 2400.

Frederik & Clive are two hours before us and Ralph and Alan are two hours after us.

We are using a constant ship's time which is UTC or GMT in old money. This was the time in Las Palmas which we'll use for the whole trip.

This means that as we travel West the sun rises later in the day and also sets later in the day. So far we have crossed a couple of time zones and will cross more before our destination of St. Lucia.

This may seem odd but it helps maintain a great routine. Meals are also at set times within this watch pattern.
